Sleeping Buddha

Soft pastel on paper

2017

30 x 59 cm

This is the first artwork I drew in soft pastels. In order to learn how to use this medium and practice techniques in blending, shading, and discovering, not only my capabilities but also those of the pastels, I chose this image based on the richness of the colour and the dynamic contrast between light and dark.

I found I had a natural flair for soft pastels; the ease in which I was able to blend the colours to produce an accurate and detailed picture captivated me.

This Buddha sleeps in a temple in Bagan, which I had the privilege of encountering in 2015 during a year of living and working in Burma.
