Soft pastel on paper

2018

42 x 38 cm

In the interest of expanding my craft and the continuation of developing my technique in the use of soft pastels, I decided to take on the challenge of a portrait; the skill of capturing the likeness and expression of the subject, and the ability to give the person an aliveness that reaches beyond the two-dimensional constraints of the picture.

I chose this picture of my niece not only for the sheer delight that is present in her face while she consumes an ice cream well aware of the mess she is making in doing so, but also for the added challenges accurately portraying chocolate ice cream, teeth, water droplets and plaits.

Framed with a white frame, white mat and non-reflective glass.

Sold. Private collection, New Zealand.
