Message in a Bottle

Soft pastel on paper

2018 - 2019

70 x 102cm

"Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.” David Hume

Message in a Bottle is a work of contemplation. On the surface it appears as a work of beauty, and it wants to be beautiful, but it also questions whether beauty is merely an illusion.

It is becoming increasingly harder to distance ourselves from our own destruction and upon closer inspection you will find, somewhere between the sand and the sky, our dirty little secret to which we would like to turn a blind eye.

Can the artwork remain beautiful knowing what you now see? Or does your perception change almost instantly?

Available. Currently on exhibition at the Academy of Fine Art in Wellington.

Framed. A black frame with black mat and non-reflective glass.
